Warsaw Autumn

Located at this address were the offices of the Warsaw Autumn Festival, which during the 1950s and 60s was the most important festival of contemporary music in Europe.

In September 1965, Arne Nordheim made his first appearance in Warsaw, in connection with a performance at the Warsaw Autumn of his Epitaffio by the Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra under Karol Stryja.

1969: Performance of Solitaire (1968), composed for the opening of the Henie-Onstad Art Centre in Høvikodden (see). This work was written in the PRES.

1970: Performance of Eco (1968) by the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, a children’s choir and the soprano Taru Valjakka under the direction of Andrzej Markowski.

1972: The Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra under Kazimierz Kord performs Floating (1970), and 20 September brings the first ever performance of Help for clarinet, trombone, piano and cello, a work commissioned by Warsztat Muzyczny.

1975: Mogens Ellegaard performs Dinosaurus for accordion and tape. The Trio Mobile (Mogens Ellegaard, Ingolf Olsen and Bent Lylloff) performs Signaler (1967) for accordion, guitar and percussion.

1978: Mogens Ellegaard and the Radio Chamber Orchestra of Hilversum (RKF) led by Ernest Bour perform Spur for accordion and orchestra (1975).

1983: Nedstigningen, a radiophonic composition for reciter, soprano, choir and orchestra, to words by Stein Mehren.

1984: 17 September, the cellist Aage Kvalbein performs Clamavi in the concert hall of the Music Academy.

1987: La mia canzone, commissioned by the Polish Society for Contemporary Music – first performance: Małgorzata Armanowska – soprano, Marta Ptaszyńska – percussion, Szábolcs Esztényi – piano,

Tenebrae, Roman Jabłoński cello, Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra under Karol Stryja

1994: Adieu performed by the Sinfonietta Cracovia led by Wojciech Michniewski in a concert at the S1 Studio in tribute to Witold Lutosławski, who died in February that year.

1997: Solitaire

1998: Tractatus, performed by the flautist Thivång and the Ensemble Ars Nova from Malmø, under the baton of Harald Eikaas (Polish premiere on 18 September). (jc)
