Trondheim Music Society

Trondheim Music Society was established in 1786. Thomas Tellefsen grew up in an environment built around his father’s keen participation in the Society, following the family’s return from Copenhagen. The Society provided the music for official events, such as the birthdays of members of the royal family, and also organised solo concerts by local and visiting musicians.

The Society's rehearsals and concerts took place in many parts of the city. For some time, in 1815, a hall was rented in the private house of the Tellefsens; later, rehearsals were conducted at the Rådstuen and at the Harmonien club at 22 Munkegata.

In 1821, the Society moved to a large palace next to the city marketplace (22 Munkegata). Initially, in the years 1821–1825, it only rented rooms in this exquisite wooden building, but it later bought the whole palace for itself. Thomas Tellefsen also gave many of his concerts here. In August 1855, he performed in a musical soirée with the Danish actor Kristian Mantzius and the signer Amalie Wage.
