Trasa Chelmland

Chopin stayed in Chełmland when he visited the Poturzyn estate of Tytus Woyciechowski, a close friend from his school days. Woyciechowski, who had inherited Poturzyn from his mother, developed the property and built a sugar factory. Chopin spent August 1830 there. This was to be his last holiday in Poland. The composer spent his time profitably, horse riding and hunting. Most of all, though, he enjoyed spending time with Woyciechowski, who had left Warsaw a few years earlier to settle down on the family estate. Their correspondence attests to their warm friendship, although only Chopin’s letters to Woyciechowski have survived. These are an invaluable source of detailed information on the composer’s life. It was probably in Poturzyn that the two young men decided to go to Vienna together. Little did Chopin know that he was planning a trip from which he would never return.
