Trasa Greater Poland
On the strength of the resolutions of the Vienna Congress, Greater Poland (Pol. Wielkopolska) found itself in Chopin’s times under Prussian rule. The Grand Duchy of Posen (Poznań) was established, with Prince Antoni Radziwiłł as viceroy. Chopin first visited Greater Poland on his way to Berlin with Professor Jarocki in 1828. The travellers spent just a few hours in Poznań before their stagecoach departed, but they did manage to meet with Archbishop Teofil Wolicki, to whom they passed on correspondence for Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz. They fully availed themselves of the archbishop’s invitation ‘in gratiam dinner’ on the return journey, when they stopped in Poznań from 30 September to 3 October.
We know most about Chopin’s stay on the estate of Prince Antoni Radziwiłł in Antonin in the autumn of 1829. The Radziwiłł estate adjoined that of the composer’s godmother, Anna Wiesiołowska, née Skarbek. The Chopins enjoyed close relations with the Wiesiołowskis and visited them in Strzyżew whenever the opportunity arose. Such visits also enabled them to maintain contacts with the owners of nearby Antonin, who admired Fryderyk’s talent; Prince Radziwiłł took a personal interest in the young artist’s development.
Another connection with Chopin in Greater Poland is at Poznań’s St Wojciech Cemetery, where Teresa Wodzińska, mother of Chopin’s one-time fiancée Maria, is buried.
