Bergen Public Library

A year before his death, on 12 November 1906, Grieg wrote an official letter to the Library in Bergen, in which he expressed the wish that, on his death, his books, manuscripts, autographs and letters become the property of the library and remain accessible to all the people of Bergen. In accordance with his wish, the music section contains a Grieg Study Centre and Grieg Collection, with a large number of manuscripts, letters, photographs and other documents, as well as literature on the composer and disc and digital recordings. Part of that collection was acquired by the library in 1919, whilst the most valuable 150 manuscripts and 700 letters to Grieg, as well as around 5000 letters of the composer himself, were acquired in 1930. Since that time, the Grieg Collection has greatly expanded, and it also contains first editions of the composer’s works, concert programmes, his own collection of other composers’ scores and books.
