Old (Gamle) Bergen Museum of Architecture

For two summer seasons, in 1873 and 1874, Grieg rented in this property in Sandviken, belonging to the shipyard owner Rasmus Rolfsen, an octagonal summer house in Chinese style, where he wrote music for the opera Olav Tryggvason, after a project by Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, and some of the music to Henrik Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt. At that time, he was staying with Nina in a rented house at 48 Sandviksveien, very close to his parents (Repslagerhuset at 85 Sandviksveien), who due to health and financial problems had sold their summer residence in Landås in 1872.
