Humlebæk
During Grieg’s times, Niels W. Gade lived in Humlebæk, and the composer would visit his mentor here. From 1973 to 1983, Gade’s grandson, Johannes W. Gade, maintained a museum in this building. Today, it is part of the well-known ‘Louisiana’ museum of art, which was originally located on the other side of the road. This is also one of the first small Danish localities to have delighted Grieg on his first trip with his friends to northern Zealand in 1865. He began his expedition alone, on 31 July, in Copenhagen, then he was joined in Rungsted by his friend Benjamin Feddersen, and together they sailed to Humlebæk. Next they walked to the train station in Kvistgaard, where Grieg wrote a letter to his wife, Nina. From Kvistgaard, they travelled by rail to Frederiksborg, where they met the last travel companion, Christian Horneman. They stayed at Rasmussen’s tavern, directly opposite Frederiksborg Castle, and for supper they ate sandwiches, hard-boiled eggs and cold chicken, washed down with tea.
