Composers / Edvard Grieg / Places catalog
Vienna
Grieg visited the capital of Austria-Hungary – an important musical centre around the turn of the nineteenth and the turn of the twentieth century – many times on his concert tours, particularly from the 1890s until his death. In 1896 and 1897, he met his friend and colleague Johannes Brahms there. Grieg invited Brahms to visit him in Bergen and Troldhaugen, claiming that his fellow composer would certainly find material there for a fifth symphony. Brahms did not live to prepare the trip; he died in 1897, and left us just four symphonies.
