Composers / Edvard Grieg / Places catalog
Stockholm
From 1814 to 1905, Stockholm was the capital and the administrative seat of the Union of Sweden and Norway. Grieg, who was a republican and a patriot, was not among the favourites of the political elite of Sweden, although he did have many friends and colleagues there, including such famous figures as Hugo Alvén, Emil Sjögren and Wilhelm Steenhammar. During the 1890s (1896, 1899), he gave several concerts in Stockholm. It should be noted, however, that his debut concert as a pianist, while still a student, was given on 18 June 1861 in Karlshamn, Sweden.
