Haukeland
This is where Adelina Werligh and Herman Hagerup, Grieg’s aunt and uncle (his mother’s brother), lived. It is also where his future wife, Nina Hagerup (b. 1845), grew up. Unlike Landås, the property of the composer’s parents, who lived there only during the summer, Haukeland was home to Nina the whole year round. Unfortunately, her father’s earnings were rather meagre, and Adelina’s mother tried to boost the family budget by running a restaurant at Haukeland, but with little success. Finally, in 1853, Nina’s father decided to sell the house and the land, and the family moved to Copenhagen.
