Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary)
One of the best known and most frequently visited European spas during the nineteenth and early twentieth century.
Grieg was a frequent guest here, on account of his poor health: he was dogged by respiratory infections (he had only one working lung), catarrh (infection) of the stomach and nervous complaints.
In 1882 – burnt out and sick – he travelled to the waters after two seasons conducting the orchestra of the ‘Harmonien’ Music Society in Bergen.
