Pittsburgh
Every year, the Music Faculty of Pittsburgh University, fulfilling the will of the founder of the Franz Lehár Endowment, invites a composer-in-residence to give lectures, work with students and conduct a concert of his or her music. In January 1991, that role befell Witold Lutosławski. He also took the opportunity to conduct the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, choosing for the programme Chain 3 and the Third Symphony. He also received the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Award.
On the centenary of the composer’s birth, it was the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra that was invited to the inaugural concert of the Berliner Musikfestspiele (31 August 2013) to accompany Anne-Sophie Mutter in Chain II.
