Belfast
In December 1987, Witold Lutosławski made his one and only visit to Northern Ireland, accepting an invitation extended by Queen’s University at the initiative of Adrian Thomas. On the evening of 16 December, he took his place among the audience for a concert of his chamber works, and the next day he was awarded an honorary doctorate of Queen’s University. Thanks to a questionnaire completed prior to the ceremony, we know that he was 5 feet 7 inches tall at the time, and his hat size was 59 cm.
