In 1992, to a commission from Joseph Gingold – initiator and head of the International Violin Competition held in Indianapolis every four years since 1982 – Witold Lutosławski composed Subito for violin and piano. That was an obligatory piece for participants in the 4th edition of the competition, and in September 1994 it was indeed played by the sixteen semi-finalists. One of them was the ultimate winner of the competition, the Canadian Juliette Kang, who soon after made the first recording of Subito for disc.
