Oslo Cathedral

The Lutheran cathedral in Oslo, built in its original form in 1697, is the main church of the bishopric covering this area and the main church in the country, used during official ceremonies by Parliament (Stortinget) and the royal court.

Arne Nordheim’s works have been presented here on numerous occasions. In one special concert, two leading performers of electronic music, Geir Jenssen and Helge Sten, presented their project Nordheim Transformed. That music, released on disc in 1998 by Rune Grammofon, consists of electroacoustic works by Nordheim from the 1960s and 1970s alongside the sound material as transformed by the two musicians. The project and its concert performance drew a great deal of interest and were treated as a bridge between the older Norwegian avant-garde and the new, electronic avant-garde.

On 5 June 2010, when Arne Nordheim died, he was give a state funeral at the cathedral, as a sign of gratitude and to honour his contribution to Norwegian musical life. The royal family was represented by Queen Sonja, and the government by the minister of culture, Anniken Huitfeldt.
