New Music Association
Arne Nordheim became a member of the New Music Association in the autumn of 1956, and from 1958 he took an active part in the business of the board. The Association organised regular meetings, during which new music was presented and listened to. In the years 1964–1966, he was president of the NMA. During this time, the organisation worked to bring about the introduction of legal regulations relating to commissions for compositional work and to increase the presence of contemporary works in musical life.
The NMA functioned as the Norwegian section of the ISCM (International Society for Contemporary Music). For this reason, Nordheim was a member of the qualifying committee for works to be presented at the ISCM's “World Music Days” festival. At the same time, he made international contacts, which enabled him to have his own works assessed and put on festival programmes.
