SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg
The concerto Spur (1975) was written to a commission from this orchestra, and it is dedicated to the accordionist Mogens Ellegaard. It was first performed in September 1975.
In 1979, Arne Nordheim and Glen Tetley were working on the ballet Stormen, based on Shakespeare’s play The Tempest. The orchestra recorded the parts of the work as they were being written, so that the dancers of the London-based Ballet Rambert could familiarise themselves with the music.
The ballet’s premiere, held on 3 May 1979 in the Rokoko Theater in Schwetzingen during the local festival, was performed by the Ballet Rambert and the SWR orchestra under Charles Darden. The ballet was Tetley’s first full-length work, and Nordheim’s music has remained his greatest success. (jc)
