Teatro La Fenice
The ‘Phoenix’ Theatre in Venice is one of the best known opera houses in Italy. It was twice burned down and rebuilt, hence its name. On 14 September 1966, during a music festival, the Radio Symphony Orchestra from Rome, under the baton of Bruno Maderna, performed Nordheim’s Epitaffio. It was included on the programme thanks to the efforts of the great composer Luigi Nono, who had heard it the previous year in Warsaw. The work met with a very positive reception in the Italian press. (jc)
