‘Lutosławski’s links with this university date back to 1975, when, with his wife, Danuta, he spent an unforgettable week on our Music Department, teaching, conducting and performing a number of his works – recalls Denis McCaldin, then head of that Department. – That was also when he was awarded the title of honorary doctorate here’. Lancaster University thereby became the first English university to award Lutosławski that honour.
In 1989, Lancaster University celebrated its silver anniversary, and to mark the occasion McCaldin commissioned special fanfares from several composers, which were to open concerts over the coming season. Lutosławski’s fanfare was performed in the concert inaugurating the season, on 12 October 1989.
