Manchester
In January 1986, Witold Lutosławski arrived in Manchester to conduct a concert with the Hallé Orchestra. He returned to the city in the winter of 1993, this time for a cycle of events between 12 and 19 February entitled ‘Lutoslawski Live’. Over those eight days, eight concerts were held featuring works by the eighty-year-old protagonist of the event. Lutosławski conducted the London Sinfonietta and the Hallé Orchestra, and his chamber works were also performed. On the evening of Sunday 14 February, students organised an ‘informal concert’, in which the Variations on a theme of Paganini were accompanied by a tasting of Polish food and beverages.
