Edward Grieg

Edvard Grieg (1843–1907), the founder of the national Norwegian school in music, the best known composer of the Norwegian Romanticism. Dubbed “the Chopin of the North”, Grieg was educated in Leipzig under the tuition of Ignaz Moscheles, Ernst Friedrich Richter and Carl Reinecke. In the year 1868, remaining under the great impression of Robert Schumann, whom he met personally, and his Piano Concerto in A minor, he wrote his own Piano Concerto, Op. 16 (in the same key), which soon became one of the biggest musical hits of all time. Other timeless compositions of Grieg include the suites from 'Peer Gynt' (combined from the music created on the request of Ibsen to his drama of the same name) and the Suite in olden style 'From Holberg’s Time'.

His house in Troldhaugen, where he lived for many years with his wife Nina, currently is the Grieg Museum.
