Edvard Munch
Edvard Munch (1863–1944), a Norwegian painter and graphic artist, belonging to the world’s top expressionists of the first years of the 20th century; his most famous painting, The Scream, created in 1983, is deemed to be an iconic representation of pain and existential anguish. Born in the Norwegian Loten, Munch grew up and was educated in Christiania (today’s Oslo), in the years 1892-1908 he spent most of his time mainly in Berlin and Paris, where he got acquainted with the works of impressionists and post-impressionists. The artist was a close friend with Henrik Ibsen, several times he prepared a number of stage designs for his plays. He finally returned to Norway in 1910.
