Kazimierz Władysław Wóycicki
Kazimierz Władysław Wóycicki (1807–1879) came from a family of doctors. He initially studied at the Faculty of Chemistry, Preparatory School for the Institute of Technology. At the same time, he sat in on the lectures of Kazimierz Brodziński and Ludwik Osiński. Wóycicki wrote for various Warsaw papers from 1827 and was made joint editor of the ‘Dziennik Warszawski’ [Warsaw Daily] in 1828. He took part in the November Uprising. In later years, he wrote many of the entries in the Universal Encyclopaedia, as well as some highly regarded memoirs and historical and literary works. These are an invaluable source of information on the cultural life of 19th-century Warsaw. Wóycicki became acquainted with Chopin in the 1820s through Dominik Magnuszewski (whose sister, Anna, he later married).
