Józef Jawurek
Józef Jawurek (Josef Javůrek) (1756–1840) was a Bohemian-born pianist, conductor, composer and teacher. Jawurek settled in Poland in 1792, during the reign of Stanisław August Poniatowski. He took over conducting the choir at the Holy Trinity Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession from Józef Elsner in 1821. Conservatorium students, instrumentalists, vocalists, amateurs and Russian military choirs were all invited to perform there. Jawurek was a capable administrator and musician, who raised the musical standard at the church appreciably. Chopin sang under Jawurek at least twice (1824 and 1825) as a teenager. He also visited him at home in ul. Bielańska.
