Jan Nepomucen Dziewanowski
Jan Nepomucen Dziewanowski (1782–1808) was the brother of Juliusz and the paternal uncle of Dominik ‘Domuś’ Dziewanowski. Mikołaj Chopin tutored Jan Dziewanowski - probably around 1798. Dziewanowski was a soldier and a Polish nationalist. He secretly left Warsaw and enlisted under Gen. Jan Henryk Dąbrowski sometime around 1806. He fought in the Battle of Somosierra (1808) and was decorated with the Legion of Honour while still on the battlefield at the behest of Napoleon. Dziewanowski was the only Pole who took part in the battle to rate a mention in the Napoleonic Army newsletter. He died in Madrid a few days later from the wounds he sustained. Dziewanowski was Ludwika Chopin’s godfather.
