Karol Mikuli
Karol Mikuli (1819–1897) – Polish pianist, composer, conductor and teacher; a pupil of Fryderyk Chopin. Before moving to Paris, he studied medicine for a year in Vienna. In the French capital, he became a lifelong friend (despite later moving to Lviv) of Alfred de Musset, Heinrich Heine, George Sand and Ferenc Liszt. He passed on the Chopin performance tradition to his pupils, who included Raoul Koczalski, Stanisław Niewiadomski and Mieczysław Sołtys. The critical edition of Chopin’s works prepared by Mikuli was highly regarded (Leipzig 1879).
