Erik Wærenskiold
Erik Wærenskiold (1855–1938) – a Norwegian painter and illustrator. During his studies in Munich, he took an interest in Norwegian fairy tales. He is known especially as the illustrator of a Norwegian edition of Snorri Sturluson’s mediaeval royal saga Heimskringla, collections of fairy tales by such authors as Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe, Norske Folkeeventyr[Norwegian folk tales] (1879) and the three-volume Eventyrbog for Børn. Norske Folkeeventyr [Tales of adventure for children] (1882–1887). As a portrait artist, he painted many famous contemporary Norwegians, such as Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson (1895), Edvard Grieg (1892, 1902), Henrik Ibsen (1895) and Gunnar Heiberg (1878).
