Aasmund Olavsson Vinje
Aasmund Olavsson Vinje (1818–1870) – a Norwegian poet and journalist who expressed the idea of Norwegian national romanticism. In 1858, he founded the publication Dølen, which he ran until his death, publishing there his travelogues and articles of a political and social-cultural character. He showed the differences between the urban and rural environments in Norway. Particularly esteemed in Norwegian literature is his description of a journey from Oslo to Trondheim, Ferdaminni fraa Sumaren 1860 [Memories of a summer’s journey in 1860], which he made in connection with the coronation of King Charles at Nidaros Cathedral. Vinje’s poetry is still published and read in Norway, thanks in part to Edvard Grieg, who composed a dozen or so songs to his verse.
