Henrik Ibsen
Henrik Ibsen (1828–1906) – a Norwegian playwright and poet, regarded as the father of modern realist drama. One of the most frequently performed playwrights in the world. At the start of his career, he wrote plays in the spirit of national romanticism, becoming a crucial figure at the time when Norway’s national cultural identity was being forged. His most famous works, however, date from his later realist period, which with time merged with naturalism and towards the end of his life also symbolism. They include Peer Gynt (to which Edvard Grieg wrote highly popular music), The Doll’s House and The Wild Duck.
