Gerhard Munthe
Gerhard Munthe (1849–1929) – a Norwegian painter and illustrator. From 1874 to 1882, he studied in Düsseldorf and Munich. He employed Norwegian motifs, creating naturalistic pictures. From the 90s, he experimented in the decorative arts, and he also produced tapestries. Together with Erik Werenskiold, he created the illustrations to works by the mediaeval Icelandic poet and historian Snorri Sturluson. From 1892 to 1905, he was on the board of the Norwegian National Gallery, of which he was subsequently director (1905–1907).
