Hans Christian Lumbye
Hans Christian Lumbye (1810–1874) – a Danish composer, known mainly for his waltzes, polkas, mazurkas and galops. Influenced by Austrian ensembles performing works by Lanner and Strauss in Copenhagen, he appeared in 1840 with his own orchestra, performing his compositions in ‘Concerts à la Strauss’. His greatest celebrity came with the opening in 1843 of the Tivoli Gardens, where he was musical director until 1872, and the tradition of musical performances that he inaugurated is continued to this day.
